Muralla de Leon, Peten, Guatemala (Don Rice 1981).

Overview

Muralla de Leon stands on the northeastern side of Lake Macanche and is bordered by two smaller ponds. Since it stands on high ground and is largely surrounded by water, it stands in a defensive location. Its defensive posture is accentuated by its walls.

Current Research

Muralla de Leon was originally recorded by Don Rice (1981). Justin Bracken, a graduate student at The Graduate Center of CUNY, investigated the defensive system of Muralla de Leon as a dissertation project. His objectives were to accurately date the constructions and discern their functions.
