Overview

Tayasal is a large archaeological site located on a peninsula just north of modern Flores, Guatemala. The site was occupied beginning at around 600 BCE. It contained two mission communities: San Miguel (est. 1702) was the first mission community in the Peten lakes area outside of the presidio, San Miguel still exists today, and San Bernanbé (est. ca. 1710), once stood to the northwest of San Miguel and was discovered by Proyecto Itza in 2010.
